Israel’s Covenants
The Covenant of God with Israel – One Covenant in Three Stages

When we speak of Israel’s covenants in the Bible, we’re talking about the binding agreements God made with Israel (or with the fathers of Israel), which shape the entire biblical narrative and God’s plan of redemption.

1. The Abrahamic Covenant

– The Initial Covenant

Definition:
The covenant begins with Abraham as God calls one man to become the father of a chosen people, through whom the world will be blessed. It is the root of God’s plan: land, seed, and blessing.

Key Scriptures:

Genesis 12:1–3 – “I will make you into a great nation … and in you all families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Genesis 15:18 – God promises Abraham land and descendants.
Genesis 17:7–8 – “I will establish my covenant … an everlasting covenant.”

Development:

God singles out Abraham (c. 2000 BC).
The promise is unconditional, based on God’s faithfulness.
Focus: A chosen family → becomes a chosen nation (Israel).

2. The Davidic Covenant

– The Amplified Covenant

Definition:
The covenant expands through David, where God guarantees a kingdom, a throne, and a royal lineage. The covenantal promise of “seed” (Abraham) becomes clearer: a Messianic King will reign forever.

Key Scriptures:

2 Samuel 7:12–16 – “Your throne shall be established forever.”
Psalm 89:3–4 – “I have made a covenant with My chosen … I will establish your seed forever.”
Isaiah 9:6–7 – The promised Son will reign on David’s throne eternally.

Development:

God identifies the royal line: from Abraham → Judah → David.
The covenant promise now includes a kingdom without end.
Focus: The covenant shifts from a nation’s identity to a universal kingdom.

3. The New Covenant in Jesus

–The Fulfilled Covenant

Definition:
The covenant reaches its climax in Jesus Christ, the Son of David and Seed of Abraham. In Him, forgiveness, Spirit, and eternal life are offered not just to Israel, but to all who believe — Jew and Gentile alike.

Key Scriptures:

Jeremiah 31:31–34 – “I will make a new covenant … I will forgive their iniquity.”
Ezekiel 36:26–27 – “I will give you a new heart and put a new Spirit within you.”
Luke 22:20 – “This cup is the new covenant in my blood.”
Galatians 3:14 – “So that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus.”

Development:

Jesus fulfills both Abrahamic and Davidic promises.
The covenant becomes universal: extended to all nations through faith in Christ.
Focus: The covenant is completed in the Church age, awaiting its full consummation in Christ’s return and eternal reign.

The Prophecies of God with Israel – One Nation in Three Stages

When we speak of Israel’s prophecies in the Bible, we are talking about the divine promises God declared over the nation, which unfold across history and reveal His unchanging plan of restoration, discipline, and final salvation for His people.

1. The Prophecy of Moses

– Restoration to the Land

Text: Deuteronomy 30:1–5

“When all these blessings and curses I have set before you come on you… then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you.”

Historical Note:

Spoken by Moses about 3,570 years ago (c. 1400 BC).
Given before Israel even entered the land, showing God foresaw their scattering and promised restoration.

Understanding:

Israel would disobey, be scattered among nations, yet God would not abandon them.
Fulfilled in part after Babylonian exile, and more strikingly in modern times (1948) with the rebirth of the nation.

Supporting Verses:

Ezekiel 37:21–22 – “I will take the children of Israel from among the nations… and bring them into their own land.”
Amos 9:14–15 – “I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted.”

2. The Prophecy of Jesus

– Blindness Until Recognition

Text: Matthew 23:37–39

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem… your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Historical Note:

Spoken by Jesus about 1,990 years ago (c. AD 30).
Fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70 and the scattering that followed.

Understanding:

Israel would enter a long period of spiritual blindness to the Messiah.
Yet Jesus prophesied a future recognition: “until you say…” — pointing to their eventual acceptance of Him.

Supporting Verses:

Luke 21:24 – “Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.”
Romans 11:25 – “Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.”

3. The Prophecy of Paul –

–Final Salvation of Israel

Text: Romans 11:26–27

“And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: ‘The Deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.’”

Historical Note:

Spoken by Paul about 1,960 years ago (c. AD 57).
Projecting into the end-time future when Israel as a nation will turn to Messiah.

Understanding:

Paul reveals the mystery: Israel’s present rejection is temporary.
National restoration and salvation will occur at Christ’s return.

Supporting Verses:

Zechariah 12:10 – “They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him.”
Isaiah 59:20–21 – “The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their sins.”
Hosea 3:4–5 – “Afterward the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king.”

Israel’s Wars
“Israel’s Prophetic Wars – One Nation in Three Battles.”

When we speak of Israel’s prophetic wars in the Bible, we are talking about the end-time conflicts revealed in Scripture, where surrounding nations and global powers rise against Israel, yet God intervenes to defend His people, display His glory, and advance His redemptive plan.

1. The Psalm 83 War

– The Missing Prophecy

Text: Psalm 83:1–8

“Come,” they say, “let us destroy them as a nation, so that Israel’s name is remembered no more.”

Nature of the Prophecy:

A confederacy of surrounding nations conspires to annihilate Israel.
This war is not clearly recorded in Israel’s past history up to AD 70 → therefore seen as a future war, yet to be fulfilled.
It reveals how Israel, though attacked, emerges as a dominant regional power.

Enemies Named (Psalm 83) and Modern Identifications:

Tents of Edom – Palestinians & Southern Jordanians
Ishmaelites – Saudis (descendants of Ishmael)
Moab – Palestinians & Central Jordanians
Hagarenes – Egyptians (Hagar as Egypt’s matriarch)
Gebal – Hezbollah & Northern Lebanese
Ammon – Palestinians & Northern Jordanians
Amalek – Arabs of the Sinai Peninsula
Philistia – Hamas of the Gaza Strip
Tyre – Hezbollah & Southern Lebanese
Assyria – Syrians, ISIS, Northern Iraqis

Understanding:

This coalition represents Israel’s immediate neighbors.
Goal: Israel’s destruction and being erased.
Outcome: God preserves Israel, leading to its rise as the next Mideast superpower.

2. The Antichrist War

– The Covenant with Death

Text: Isaiah 28:14–18

“You boast, ‘We have entered into a covenant with death, with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement.’ … But your covenant with death will be annulled; your agreement with the realm of the dead will not stand.”

Nature of the Prophecy:

Israel enters into a deceptive peace treaty (a “covenant with death”).
This agreement is made with the Antichrist in the final days (Daniel 9:27).
Result: Temporary safety, but betrayal leads to invasion and devastation.

Understanding:

This war is eschatological, tied to the Great Tribulation.
Israel will trust in man’s promises, but only Messiah can save them.
Fulfilled during the reign of the Antichrist, when Israel faces her darkest hour.

Supporting Verses:

Daniel 9:27 – “He will confirm a covenant with many for one seven…”
Matthew 24:15–22 – Jesus warns of the “abomination of desolation” tied to this event.

3. The Ezekiel 38–39 War

–The Gog and Magog Invasion

Text: Ezekiel 38:8–12

“In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel… to plunder and loot.”

Nature of the Prophecy:

A massive coalition of nations from the far north and beyond rise against Israel.
Nations listed include Gog (leader from Magog), Persia (Iran), Cush (Sudan/Ethiopia), Put (Libya), Gomer and Beth-Togarmah (Turkey/regions of Asia Minor).
Objective: plunder Israel’s prosperity.

Understanding:

This war is larger than Psalm 83, involving powers beyond Israel’s immediate neighbors.
God Himself intervenes with earthquakes, hail, fire, and confusion → the invading armies are destroyed.
Result: God’s glory revealed among the nations, Israel begins to recognize His hand.

Supporting Verses:

Ezekiel 39:7 – “I will make known my holy name among my people Israel.”
Zechariah 14:2–3 – “I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it… then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations.”

d. The Victor

Yahweh, the God of Israel – “the God of covenants.”
He Himself intervenes to defeat the invaders.

e. Time of the Event

Clearly set in the end times (Ezek. 38:8, 16).
Likely close to, or at, the Second Coming of Christ.

f. Motivation for the Invasion (Ezek. 38:12–13)

To seize spoil, plunder, and wealth from Israel.
Greed and hostility fuel the confederacy.

g. Conditions Inside Israel (Ezek. 38:8, 11, 14)

Israel dwelling securely, “without walls or bars.”
Nation at peace, prosperous, and regathered from exile.

h. Defeat of the Invaders (Ezek. 38:18–22)

God destroys them supernaturally through:

Earthquake
Pestilence & bloodshed
Torrential rain
Great hailstones
Fire and brimstone

i. Aftermath of the Event (Ezek. 39:9–16)

Burial of the dead for seven months.
Burning of weapons for seven years.
A massive cleanup operation in the land of Israel.

j. Purpose of the Prophecy (Ezek. 39:7)

To vindicate and uphold the holy name of God.
The nations will know that Yahweh is the Lord.
Israel will see God’s direct intervention in history.

Summary:
The Ezekiel 38–39 war is a global invasion against Israel led by Gog (from the land of Magog). Its outcome is not decided by military might, but by the supernatural hand of God, who crushes the invaders to glorify His name and reveal His power to Israel and the nations.
